This was Bullneck. Apparently named from his size - he would push and turn his tool cart single handed in the street. He was the first apprentice of the master sweep James Short of 43 Sherborne St. He eventually took over the house and business. The house and business was originally owned by John Russell who was the originator of the "Old Man" figure that used to adorn the outside of the house and is now in Cheltenham Museum. Bullneck appeared illiterate and died from alcoholism and liver disease.

Ellen died of liver cancer. Alice and Kate died of scarlet fever and were buried on the same day. The only daughter of Florence May married the first son of Jesse Horatio in 1939.
