William was variously a drayman at Cheltenham brewery, a postman for many years and also maintained the family tradition of chimney sweep. William liked a drink and he liked to gamble - on the horses and at cards. In fact he spent quite a lot of time at the Beaufort Arms on the London Road, Charlton Kings doing all those things. The sweep tradition was carried on by his eldest son Arthur, who attempted a business after returning from the Navy. Denis swept chimneys for many years for pin money. William died at quite an early age from leukemia.

What can I say ? She was our Nan and everyone called her Hetty. She gave me all as a child and as an adult I never gave her enough of my time. I try to excuse myself by saying that I was busy making a career and raising a family, but that is just not good enough. I would spend my weekends and school holidays with her – we would collect fresh eggs from the chickens for breakfast and in the summer, strawberries from the garden for tea. We would play card games for hours. She taught me much did my Nan. When she was widowed and found it increasingly difficult to look after herself, she went to live with Arthur at Reservoir Lodge, Dowdeswell
