Birth places are somewhat confused. The census of 1850/1870 shows William as born in Pennsylvania and his parents of foreign birth. Whereas in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census, Vanburen claims his father was born in Scotland. Guess he may have been confused with his grandparents. William McCray was probably born in Pennsylvania because he enlisted in the Pennsylvania Militia and served from September 10th 1814 until December 19th 1814 under Capt. James Lackey (Colonel Pierson), He was finally discharged January 16th, 1815. He was awarded a pension of $8 per month. He made application for Bounty Land in Morrow County,Ohio in March 1855, being awarded 40 acres under Warrant #16813. Bounty Land was given to veterans from 1775 until 1855 in lieu of military remuneration.

The 1870 census shows no origin for Hannah's parents. Although Vanburen claims his mother was born in Scotland, it is more probable that she was US born and the couple married in US.
