Vanburen grew up in Ohio as a farmhand and came to Illinois with his parents in his youth. In later life he was described as a teamster and he clearly worked with horses as the complete photograph shows.

Research suggests that Sarah was raised by her grandfather in Ohio. Like her daughter after her, Sarah seems to have been responsible for raising grandchildren also (we know that they adopted Albert Jr, the son of Albert after his divorce from Ann Mosley). Prior to her death she was suffering what was described as a “lingering illness” and her death was apparently hastened by a fall (broken back?)
